Missed Out on a Graduate Role? Australian Law Firms Are Still Recruiting for 2027

Missed Out on a Graduate Role? Australian Law Firms Are Still Recruiting for 2027

Think you've missed your chance to secure a graduate legal position for 2027? Not necessarily. While many major law firm recruitment rounds have closed, several Australian employers are still accepting applications, and some deadlines are only days away.

For final-year law students and recent graduates, October can feel like the end of the recruitment season.

Many of Australia's larger firms have already completed their clerkship and graduate recruitment processes, leaving unsuccessful applicants wondering whether they will need to wait another year. But the graduate recruitment calendar is not the same across every firm, city or employer.

A review of current recruitment opportunities reveals several pathways that remain available for graduates hoping to begin their legal careers in 2027.

Hall & Wilcox is recruiting across three cities. National law firm Hall & Wilcox is currently accepting applications for its 2027 Law Graduate Program in Adelaide, Canberra and Darwin.

The firm's Canberra programme offers a 12-month rotational experience, allowing graduates to work across different practice areas while receiving structured professional development and feedback. Applications close on 4 November for Adelaide and Canberra, and 22 November for Darwin, according to the firm's published recruitment timetable.

For graduates willing to consider opportunities outside Sydney and Melbourne, these positions provide another route into commercial legal practice.

Government legal careers are another option

The Tasmanian Department of Justice is also recruiting for its 2027 Legal Graduate Program, with applications closing on 8 November. The programme combines paid legal work with the Tasmanian Legal Practice Course. Successful applicants initially work part-time while completing their practical legal training, before transitioning to full-time employment. The department offers experience in legal research, drafting, government legal services and public sector decision-making.

Applicants must meet specific qualification and Tasmanian Legal Practice Course requirements.

International firms may offer further opportunities

Global firm Squire Patton Boggs is advertising applications for its 2027 Sydney graduate programme. The programme offers rotations across different practice areas, mentoring from senior lawyers and opportunities to participate in pro bono work.

Jones Day is also advertising a 2027 graduate opportunity in Perth, with exposure to matters involving resources, energy, disputes and employment law. Applicants should check the firms' official recruitment pages for the latest eligibility requirements and closing dates.

Don't assume the recruitment season is over

For graduates who have not secured an offer, the remaining opportunities are a reminder that legal recruitment does not operate on a single national timetable.

Some firms recruit graduates primarily from their seasonal clerkship programmes. Others accept direct applications, recruit on a rolling basis or advertise positions when business needs arise.

Government departments, legal aid organisations and regional firms may also operate recruitment schedules that differ substantially from the major commercial firms.

Being open to different locations, practice areas and employers can expand the opportunities available.

Missing out on a graduate offer during the main recruitment round does not mean missing out on a legal career.

The transition from university to practice is rarely identical for every graduate. Some begin at international firms, others enter government, community legal services or smaller practices. Many build successful careers after taking a less conventional route. For law students still searching, the priority should be finding an environment that offers meaningful legal experience, supervision and opportunities to develop.

The graduate recruitment season may be winding down, but it is not over.
