City of London Law Society Offers Support to Weil Trainees Amid Firm Closure Plans

The City of London Law Society (CLLS) has expressed its commitment to supporting trainees and junior lawyers at Weil, as the US law firm prepares to wind down its operations in London.
The CLLS's immediate focus is on the junior lawyers at Weil's London office, who are facing uncertainty regarding their future careers as the firm moves towards closure. Colin Passmore, chairman of the CLLS, highlighted the anxiety that these developments may cause for those affected.
Passmore stated that the CLLS has a history of supporting City law firms and their personnel during challenging times, and it intends to provide guidance and assistance to the employees at Weil as needed.
This pledge of support follows a recommendation from Weil's management committee for an orderly wind down of the firm, with a vote by partners on the proposal expected in the coming days.
The situation raises concerns for the future of the firm's London trainees and those who hold training contract offers for upcoming intakes. According to the 2027 Legal Cheek Firms Most List, Weil recruits approximately 15 trainees annually in London, which means around 30 trainees are currently engaged in the firm's two year training programme.
Reports indicate that associates in the London office have been informed they will receive a 90 day payout, with the office anticipated to close by 31 December. Currently, the London operation employs around 200 lawyers, including 45 partners, as well as over 120 business services staff.
The proposed closure of Weil's London office follows a period of instability for the firm, characterised by senior departures, unsuccessful merger discussions, and uncertainty regarding its leadership. Despite these challenges, Weil has affirmed its commitment to supporting its employees throughout the wind down process.
