Anthropic Appoints Robert Mahari as Head of Claude for Legal
Anthropic has announced the appointment of Robert Mahari as its first official Head of Claude for Legal. Mahari, a Fellow of Stanford’s CodeX legal tech group, recently completed a Doctorate in legal AI at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and also founded his own legal AI startup, Akiva.
In this new role, Mahari will work alongside Mark Pike, who serves as Associate General Counsel and product lead for Claude in the legal sector. Pike has played a crucial role in establishing the legal vertical for Anthropic’s large language model, Claude.
This strategic hire comes at a time when competitors, such as OpenAI, are preparing to unveil their own legal offerings, following the recent recruitment of Ironclad founder Jason Boehmig.
Mahari's appointment signifies Anthropic's commitment to expanding its talent pool for Claude for Legal, which is essential for effectively addressing the extensive demands of the legal market. The expectation is that further hires will follow to bolster this initiative.
In a statement on social media, Mahari expressed his enthusiasm for joining Anthropic, stating his aim to influence how Claude serves law firms, in house legal teams, and legal technology companies, from product development to go to market strategies.
Mahari has spent nearly a decade integrating AI into the legal field, advocating for the establishment of a JD PhD programme focused on the intersection of AI and law. He noted that at Anthropic, there was no need to convince colleagues of the transformative potential of AI in legal practice.
He highlighted the importance of developing tools that prioritise privilege, confidentiality, and accuracy, asserting that the legal profession's evolution must centre on legal education and access to justice. Mahari looks forward to collaborating with the talented team at Anthropic to reimagine the legal profession.
According to Mahari, the core of Claude for Legal comprises building blocks co designed with the legal community to enhance lawyers' workflows. He mentioned that lawyers are actively engaging with Claude Cowork, with enterprises deriving significant value from AI driven applications across their legal functions. Furthermore, Anthropic’s models have been recognised for their performance in Legora’s recent benchmark for agentic legal reasoning.
Mahari sees his role as a bridge between the capabilities of AI and the needs of legal practitioners, aiming to communicate the possibilities of legal AI while continuously learning from the legal community to advance the field.
As the legal technology landscape evolves, Mahari's appointment at Anthropic comes at a critical juncture for the development of legal AI solutions.
Additionally, two major Legal Innovators Conferences are scheduled for November in New York and London, providing a platform for discussions on the latest advancements in legal technology.
